![]() Cook's Monument, Cooktown (24KB) | With the discovery of gold on the Palmer River in 1873, Cooktown was founded and within a year had grown to a town of 15,000 people. By the turn of the century the population was over 35,000 people. In 1949 Cooktown suffered a major setback when it was devastated by a cyclone. Cooktown, however, refused to die and in the 1950s the first tourists began to arrive. The James Cook Historical Museum should not be missed. It portrays much of the life and times of the early days and has some award-winning displays. The Lighthouse on Grassy Hill, named by Cook but no longer grassy, gives a good view of the surrounding area. |
